App Rejection Fix Pack · Guide

What does an App Store guideline 4.3(a) design spam rejection mean, and how do I fix it?

Guideline 4.3(a) says not to create multiple Bundle IDs of the same app, and Apple suggests one app that offers the variations, for example through in-app purchase. Related rules cover apps indistinguishable from ones already widely available (4.3(b)) and apps built from commercial templates (4.2.6). The fix is a real product difference, or merging variants into a single app, explained clearly in your reply.

Steps to work through a 4.3(a) rejection

  1. Read the exact wording. Copy the full rejection message and note whether it mentions similar apps, a template, multiple Bundle IDs or apps already widely available. Each points to a different fix.
  2. Check your own other apps. List every app under your developer account. If two or more share most of their screens and features, for example one per city, team or client, plan to combine them into one app with the variations offered inside it.
  3. Find the apps yours resembles. Search the store for your category terms and screenshot the closest matches. Compare screens, onboarding, feature list and icon side by side so you can see what the reviewer saw.
  4. Identify what only your app does. Write down the features, content or audience that the similar apps do not cover. If you cannot name at least one meaningful difference, the honest fix is product work, not a reply.
  5. Make the difference visible early. Put your distinct feature in the first screens a reviewer reaches, and update screenshots and the description so they show it. A reviewer who has to search for the difference may not find it.
  6. If built from a template, rework it. Replace stock layouts, sample content and default assets from the template or app builder with your own design and content, and add functionality beyond what the template ships with.
  7. Explain the changes in your reply. In App Store Connect, reply with a short list of what changed in this build and what the app offers that similar apps do not. Keep it factual and point the reviewer to the exact screens.

What not to do

When a done-for-you pack helps

A done-for-you pack helps when you are unsure which part of the notice is the real objection, or you need to decide between a product change and a reply. We map each point in your notice to the guideline section, list the build, metadata and screenshot changes, flag what needs product work rather than a reply, and draft the reply and a resubmission checklist for you to send from your own account.

Questions

Can I appeal a 4.3 rejection instead of changing the app?

Yes, you can submit an appeal to the App Review Board if you believe the reviewer misread your app. An appeal works best when you can point to concrete features that set the app apart. If the app really does match others closely, an appeal without changes is unlikely to help, so product changes usually come first.

Is it 4.3(a) if I published the same app for several clients?

Often, yes. The guideline asks developers not to create multiple Bundle IDs of the same app and suggests offering the variations inside a single app, for example through in-app purchase. Agencies building near-identical apps for many clients can run into this. Check the current guideline text, since Apple also has rules on template and app-builder apps under guideline 4.2.6.

Will changing the icon and colours be enough?

Usually not. Reviewers look at what the app does and how it works, not only how it looks. A new icon or colour scheme leaves the features and flows the same, so the similarity remains. Plan changes to functionality or content, then update screenshots and the description so they reflect the new build.
